The Army Navy Air Force Veterans ANAVET Fred Nesbit Branch 176, were on hand to give Bill Michie his final veteran’s honour. The ANAVET chapter was established on the Island in 2018, and they have been proudly doing these commemorations for veterans at families’ requests. The bugle played Taps and the Sgt. Charles A. Golden Silver Star Memorial Rifle Team fired a salute over Mr. Michie’s grave. Mrs. Michie was then presented with the folded Canadian flag. Tucked inside were three empty bullet shells to represent honour, duty and service. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/69/45/6945cc49-bc3b-4cc3-bace-d0f9afcaa217/content/images/2026/09/cemetery-grave.jpg) William Michie’s grave. “He got a better send-off now than when he died,” Mrs. Doris Michie said, with tears in her eyes. “It was beautiful. I never thought it would be like that,” she said. “I was surprised because I didn’t know nothing about it until they approached me about it. And I thought, ‘oh, that can’t be right,’ because I never heard tell of it. But it was beautiful. They said if I couldn’t come, they would bring the flag to the Manor, but I couldn’t believe it, so, I had to see it for myself,” said the spry 97-year-old. “It was beautiful,” she added, “I’m glad I came.” This fall, when the veterans’ banners are hung on the light standards in downtown Little Current, William Michie’s banner will be among them.
