# Sheguiandah Fall Fair takes place this coming weekend

SHEGUIANDAH—The Sheguiandah Fall Fair is part of a tradition that celebrates rural life and the many skills and traditions that life encompasses. This year, the organizing committee has decided to change things up a bit, enhancing the prize pool with the help of local businesses.

“This year, the Sheguiandah Fall Fair decided to try something new,” said Fall Fair Committee member Linda Erskine. “We chose a few businesses in Little Current and asked if they would sponsor something in the booklet (that outlines the categories and prizes at the fair). We were very pleased with the responses we got. We have six businesses that are sponsoring different things in the adult section.”

“The Manitoulin Expositor is sponsoring the photo of an historic building on Manitoulin, the Needle Box is sponsoring a quilt block, Knitter’s Cove is sponsoring anything knit in the knitting category, the Woods family is sponsoring one of the wooden barn quilts, Red Bow Flooring and Wall Fashions is sponsoring a picture of the swing bridge, and the Anchor Inn is sponsoring the butter tarts,” shared Ms. Erskine. “All of these places have been very generous, but we’re not going to say how much the gift certificates are for until the prizes are given out.”

“To avoid some confusion, we’ve always had specials where if you sponsored it, you took that item home with you; that’s not the case with these things,” she said. “If you put in something knitted and you win the prize, you still get to take your knitted item back home with you. It’s not being kept by the sponsor.”

“Items for the fair can be dropped off on Thursday, September 17 at the Sheguiandah Centennial Museum between 4 and 8 pm and on Friday, between 10 am and 4:30 pm, and then the judging will start after 5 pm,” said Ms. Erskine. “Of course, only the Judges are allowed in while we’re judging.”

The fall fair itself takes place on [Saturday, September 19, between 10 am and 3 pm](https://calendar.app.google/qwZbJKKVb2Y6dy1k7?ref=manitoulin.com).

“We will have all of the displays, we will have a barbecue, we will have music and we will have vendors,” said Ms. Erskine. “I hope to see everyone come out.”

“Fair committee chair Cindy Tarr went into the schools and worked with some of the teachers and classrooms to get the kids more involved, and I believe Kathy Berry has done things at the library as well,” she said. “Lisa Halleart has run workshops on the barn quilts, so hopefully we’ll get lots of people out, putting lots of fruit, vegetables, baked goods, knitting photos and lots of kids from the schools and the 4-H Club.”

Booklets can be picked up at the NEMI Public Library, the town office, the information centre, Knitters Cove, the Anchor Inn, Needle Box and The Manitoulin Expositor.
