M’CHIGEENG—Athena Gravelle, a Grade 12 student at Manitoulin Secondary School student has won a Loran Scholarship. The Loran Scholarship is a prestigious national award, and Ms. Gravelle made it to the quarterfinals, winning $3,000.

“I would be considered a provincial/territorial award winner, and quarterfinalist of the Loran scholarships,” said Athena, a Billings township resident. “Many quarter-finalists, although I am unsure of the number of students who made it that far, did not go home with any money. The scholarship I received is a one-time payment to my chosen university.”

“When I received the call, they told me that based on the virtual interviews of the third stage I demonstrated an excellent sense of leadership potential,” said Athena. “There was only a maximum of 70 runners-up to the semi-finals who each received $3,000.”
