Students at C.C. McLean and Central Manitoulin Public School released over 200 Chinook salmon into local waterways. The fish were raised from eggs in school micro-hatcheries as part of a 10-year partnership with the Gore Bay Fish and Game Club.
MANITOULIN鈥擳hanks to the effort of students at two Manitoulin elementary schools and the Gore Bay Fish and Game Club (GBFGC), healthy Chinook salmon have been stocked in two different waterways on the island.
鈥淏ye fishies!鈥 were the shouts heard from students of Charles C. McLean Public School (C.C. McLean) as fish were released in Bickell鈥檚 Creek in Gore Bay last Wednesday.
On Wednesday, April 29, students from Central Manitoulin Public School (Mindemoya) released 90 Chinook Salmon into the M鈥機higeeng River, with these fish also part of the GBFGC micro-hatchery program. 鈥淪tudents have been raising the salmon for six months at their school,鈥 reported Patti-Jo Woods, CMPS Grade 6 teacher. 鈥淭hey were given the fertilized eggs in October by the fish and game club (GBFGC).鈥 This yearly endeavor at the school was facilitated by Ian Anderson of the GBFGC and by Ms. Woods. The micro-hatchery program has been run in the school for approximately 10 years.
