Safety
As boating season begins, the Manitoulin Partners for Water Safety coalition urges residents to prioritize safety by always wearing a lifejacket, as 78% of recreational boating deaths involve non-wearers.
MANITOULIN鈥擬anitoulin Island is closely connected to the waters around it. Whether you use fishing boats, sailboats, kayaks or canoes, waterways are a big part of life on the Island and the North Shore. With boating season here, local health and emergency services are reminding everyone to put water safety first before heading out on the lakes and rivers this summer.
Experts suggest a few easy steps to help everyone stay safe before going out on the water: Check the weather and water conditions in advance; always wear a properly fitted lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD); make sure your boat has all required safety gear in good condition; tell someone your route and expected return time; bring a charged cell phone or other means of communication; never mix alcohol or drugs with boating; and supervise children closely at all times.
Taking a little time to get ready can help prevent accidents and make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time on the water.
