LITTLE CURRENT鈥擳he first Manitoulin Community Safety Day of Saturday, June 6 was a big success. Hundreds of people came to the NEMI Recreation Centre where they met first responders, health workers, emergency preparedness organizations and community groups from Manitoulin Island and Northern Ontario. They also took in the sights on hand, viewing various emergency vehicles and equipment, while little ones participated in face painting, and everyone enjoyed the fundraiser barbecue, which was also on site.

Expositor sales manager Kevin Spikes co-organized the event alongside the Northeast Town鈥檚 own Lisa Hallaert, which brought together emergency services, health groups, social agencies and community organizations in one place. Inspired by similar events in Southern Ontario, it quickly grew into a large community gathering that organizers hope will become a yearly tradition.

鈥淲e鈥檙e really happy with how it all went,鈥 said Mr. Spikes. 鈥淲e鈥檙e really grateful for all of the vendors and community partners and sponsors, along with the Township of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands and The Expositor. We鈥檙e also very thankful for all of the service people, first responders and health care professionals who came out and showed their support.鈥

Patty Cuomo and Valisa Edwards of Mnidoo Mnising Crisis Response Team were on hand to answer questions about their services.
