Central Manitoulin council rejected a proposal to recertify an elevator in the former Trinity United Church. Instead, they voted to lock out the lift to avoid spending funds on an unused building.
CENTRAL MANITOULIN鈥擜 recommendation from the property committee to recertify an elevator in the former Trinity United Church property acquired by the Municipality of Central Manitoulin was defeated soundly during its June 11 meeting.
The motion hung in the balance for a few moments following its moving by Councillor Dale Scott until Councillor Derek Stephens seconded the motion in order to 鈥減ut it on the table鈥 for discussion.
鈥淲e have a lift over there that鈥檚 not going to be used that much and we鈥檙e jumping in here and spending money to get it up and running,鈥 said Councillor Stephens. 鈥淚鈥檝e got a problem with this kind of stuff.鈥 He noted that the community centre, which does not currently have an operating lift, is more important and yet was removed from the municipal budget.
鈥淭his one here is part of our emergency plan,鈥 he said, referring to the community centre. 鈥淪o, anybody that needs to be going in there and is disabled will require it. We鈥檝e never been able to find the money for it. Now, all of a sudden we can find money for this.鈥
