March 21, 1938 - June 14, 2026
It is with deep sadness to announce our cherished father, husband and grandfather, Ernie Marcotte, has passed away suddenly and peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026 at Thunder Bay Health Sciences Centre.
Ernie is survived and sadly missed by wife Nellie of 68 years of marriage. He is predeceased by his parents Joseph Patrick and Jeanne Marcotte. Ernie鈥檚 sons Dan (Cambridge), Doug (Thunder Bay) and Jason (Thunder Bay) will forever miss their father鈥檚 kind spirit, generosity and tenacity to persevere to overcome life challenges. Ernie is deeply missed by daughters-in-law Susanne and Leeann; sisters Yvonne (Brideau), Bonnie (Doiron) and Nancy Marcotte; grandchildren Christopher, Rachelle, Patrick and Hilary. He is predeceased by his brother Carl Marcotte.
Born and raised in the Sudbury area, Ernie attended the Haileybury School of Mines, graduated in Mining Technology and worked for Denison Mines in Elliot Lake, Ontario. He received his Professional Engineer designation in 1970. Ernie鈥檚 60 year involvement in the mining industry provided new challenge with each increasing level of responsibility from mineral processing operations (Denison, Falconbridge Nickel Mines) to senior executive roles (North American Palladium) and serving on the Board of Directors (Frontier Lithium, Plato Gold). In volunteer efforts related to mining industry employment, Ernie was an active founding member of the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP), a technical society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). Ernie was twice Chairman of the Canadian Mineral Processors. Recognizing excellence in the field of mineral processing, he was the recipient of the CMP Mineral Processor of the Year award. Ernie received a CIM fellowship and life membership from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, recognizing outstanding contributions to CIM and/or the mining, metallurgical and petroleum industries.
Outside of work, Ernie took great pride with his family in clearing the lot on Manitoulin Island and building the cottage where they enjoyed vacation days swimming, snorkeling and evening campfires on the beach with family and friends. Ernie enjoyed recreational curling, found time to manage the Levack high school hockey team, participated in the church choir and was a member of the Onaping Falls Lions Club. Ernie was an extraordinary man, marvelous husband, good family provider, who often expressed his love for his family and always had time to offer inspiring guidance. The family will always remember and forever cherish the good times and laughter with Ernie at home and at the cottage.
Dad, our family giant, will forever be missed and remain in our hearts. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Thunder Bay. Interment ceremony and burial will be held in Sudbury, Ontario at a later date.
