MANITOULIN鈥擳he memory of April鈥檚 flooding is still fresh for many Manitoulin Island residents. The rapid snowmelt and heavy rain overwhelmed drainage systems, closed roads and led to several communities declaring states of emergency.

Communities across Manitoulin dealt with flooded roads, stressed infrastructure and emergency responses as water levels rose quickly, causing several townships to declare emergencies. In some places, roads were blocked and important services stopped for a time, showing how quickly spring weather can become an emergency on the Island.

Flooding often starts with things we expect, like snow melt, rain and still frozen ground, so people may not realize how fast normal weather can turn dangerous. Officials say that getting ready well before flooding starts can make the difference between a small problem and major damage.
