June 29, 1949 - May 7, 2026

Herbert Scott (Herb), of Helena, MT, passed away on May 7, 2026 after months of suffering from a massive stroke and having multiple long-term health issues. He was 77 years old at the time of his death. Herbert was from Manitoulin Island, but also lived in multiple other places in Canada and across WA, OR, NV and MT. Herb Scott was born on June 29, 1949 to Edward (Ted) and Marie Scott in Mindemoya. As a young boy, he enjoyed fishing at the creek near his family home on Manitoulin Island. He was very fond of his grandpa Herb and learned how to hunt, fish and live off the land from him. He also learned hard work and compassion for taking care of others from his family, especially his parents. For fun, Herb enjoyed playing hockey and racing snowmachines. After he graduated from Gore Bay High School in 1968, he wanted to study culinary arts. He had an apprenticeship arranged but his mentor backed out at the last minute. He worked at the high school cafeteria for a couple of years where he met an older woman and fell in love. Sharon was teaching typing and business courses and Herb was working in the school kitchen. She had moved to Thunder Bay for a teaching job from St. Paul, Minnesota where she was born and raised. After they got married, he decided to change gears and became a long haul truck driver. He had a very successful career in the trucking industry and held various positions including safety manager for a haz-mat hauling company. He always wanted to make sure that everyone, including our environment, were going to be safe and taken care of. That speaks to his everyday character with all whom he crossed paths with. Herb and Sharon went on to have three children: Ted, Scotty and Stephanie. All three children were born at Guelph General Hospital. The family lived in Guelph, Manitoulin Island, Edmonton, and finally settled for a while in Spokane, WA where all three kids graduated high school. They enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and hosting family gatherings at their home together, especially the holidays. Herb played Santa Claus his entire life, not professionally, for family and friends only. They were active members of Northwood Presbyterian in Spokane where Herb served as a Deacon and Sharon taught Sunday school. Even though Herb didn鈥檛 go into culinary arts as a profession, you could often find him in the kitchen at all events, family and church related, cooking or baking apple crisp. It brought him a lot of joy to cook for people and people loved his cooking! Herb and Sharon left Spokane in 1998 after their youngest graduated high school and lived in Nevada for a few years before being relocated to Portland, Oregon for work. There, they lived in a floating house on the Columbia River where Herb was then able to keep his fishing line in the water 24/7, sometimes even hooking a sturgeon. Herb and Sharon fell in love with the Oregon Coast and held annual summer vacations there. Each year, they would invite family members to a beach house where we would go deep sea fishing, crabbing and just enjoy being together in a beautiful place. Tragically, Sharon passed away from cancer caused by asbestos poisoning in 2008. They were married 35 years when she died. After Sharon passed away, Herb suffered a cardiac arrest episode and spent a couple months in the hospital rehabilitating. The medical staff often said he was a medical miracle and they had no explanation of his episode. He lived with his youngest child, Stephanie, and her family in Spokane while he recovered. He later moved to MT when Stephanie and her family moved. He spent the last of his years following his grandchildren around the state of MT (with his daughter Stephanie) to watch them play their sports. He was often found having bragging sessions about his grandsons and their athletic prowess, but his first born grandchild, Audrianna, was always his pride and joy. He didn鈥檛 live to make it to watch her graduate with a welding certification but he told everyone he crossed paths with about his granddaughter, the welder. Herb is survived by his children Ted, Scotty and Stephanie, his grandchildren Audrianna, Daniel, and Michael Aakre (Stephanie), his brother Donald (Paula), brother in-laws Darren Purvis (Damaris Scott), Brad Swanson (Marlys), Jeff Swanson (Joy), sister in-law Judy Devlin (Jim) and many adored nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Sharon, parents Ted and Marie Scott, brothers David and Tom, sister Damaris, nephew Matthew and niece Lauren. His family is asking for donations to help pay for trips back to Canada and Washington to lay him to rest. https://gofund.me/a74b56f35
