Frustrated by continuous vandalism, theft, and littering costing taxpayers thousands, Gore Bay Council is moving to install a $25,000–$40,000 municipal security camera system.
GORE BAY—The Town of Gore Bay is fed up with the amount of vandalism that has taken place over the past few years and has decided to look at installing security cameras at municipal facilities and public spaces within the community.
Kelly Chaytor, community services manager told council at a meeting last week that over the past several months, including the same day of the meeting, the town “has experienced a noticeable increase in vandalism, misuse of public facilities and disrespect of municipal property. These incidents have resulted in increased staff time, higher operating costs, additional maintenance requirements and unnecessary expenses borne by local taxpayers.”
Town staff have documented repeated concerns at several municipal facilities, said Ms. Chaytor. “This includes the Gore Bay swim beach washrooms being left in unsanitary and unacceptable conditions, vandalism at the marina, including water service connections being intentionally filled with a glue-like substance; theft of toilet paper and other supplies from public washrooms; portable toilets being pushed over and damaged; gazebos and public gathering spaces being defaced with graffiti and littered with garbage; tampering with municipal property and infrastructure; swim beach play structures being pushed into the lake; residential garbage being disposed of in municipal and marina waste bins, and construction and building materials being improperly discarded in municipal garbage containers.”
