Two Grade 8 girls heroically pulled a drowning man to shore at Low Island beach, where a bystander performed life-saving CPR to revive him.
LOW ISLAND鈥擜 quiet day at the beach down at Little Current鈥檚 Low Island beach suddenly erupted into chaos with the discovery of an unresponsive man floating in the water by the swimming docks. Two young girls heroically struggled to bring the man to shore while bystanders rushed over to help. The two youths who jumped into action were newly graduated Grade 8 students Lauren Musquetier and Keira Priddle.
The girls share with The Expositor the moment they realized something was very wrong. 鈥淲e were swimming out from the docks, it was kind of far out,鈥 said Keira, 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 tell if he (the man in the water) jumped in or if he got pushed in or if something else happened, but all of a sudden I look over and he鈥檚 in the water and I didn鈥檛 see him struggling at first, but his wife, she was motioning to us asking 鈥榗an you help?鈥 She wasn鈥檛 yelling our names because she didn鈥檛 know our names, but she was like, 鈥榚xcuse me, can you help? He can鈥檛 swim well. Can you push him towards the dock?鈥 but I didn鈥檛 know that he was already like struggling and going under.鈥
Keira saw the top of the struggling swimmer鈥檚 head just above the water.
鈥淚 swam over there and (Lauren) was behind me,鈥 Keira said. 鈥淚 swam over to him, and he was like this far from the top of the water.鈥 Keira holds her hands up measuring roughly two feet.
