Joseph Panamick, a resident of M’Chigeeng, passed away at the Mindemoya Hospital, surrounded by his family, on Monday, February 23, 2026 at the age of 70 years. Lovingly remembered by his long-time partner Virginia Peltier. He is survived by his children and grandchildren. Joe was born on Manitoulin Island, the seventh child in a family of 10, to his parents, James Panamick Sr. and Christine Panamick (nee Eshkibok), both predeceased. Survived by his siblings Vincent Panamick, Henry Sr. Panamick, Hazel Recollet, Eileen “Sweety” Simon, Jimmy Panamick and Bernard Panamick. He was predeceased by his older brothers Isadore Panamick, Johnny Panamick and sister Kate Roy. Lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Joseph Louis Panamick, known to many simply as “Geedan” or “Joe,” lived a humble life. His first language was Anishinaabemowin and his strongest way of communicating and understanding the world around him was through using it. He did various odd jobs over the years, from cutting wood in Michigan, working at the mill in Chapleau, to maintenance at the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation and lastly helping his family. Among his various odd jobs, his longest-held and most meaningful role was serving as a fire keeper at various community events, traditional wakes and ceremonies, a responsibility he carried with pride. He enjoyed spending his time at powwows, where he often camped for the weekend or helped with the fire. His other favourite pastimes were bingo, casinos and taking road trips. He spent many years between M’Chigeeng and Wiikwemkoong, specifically Rabbit Island, forming friendships wherever he went. Anyone who passed him on the road knew him by his colourful hat, his nod and his familiar greeting: “What’s happening man?” Joe will be remembered for his steady presence, his good company and the simple way he moved through life. Rested at the M’Chigeeng Community Complex. Wake on Thursday, February 26, 2026 from 12 pm. Service was on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 3 pm. Burial in the M’Chigeeng 91˵ Cemetery.
