SUDBURY鈥擳rustees of the Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) are pleased that a good surplus is looking likely for the 2026-2027 school year.
鈥淚t is nice to see that we (RDSB) will not be in the same position as other boards of having to lay off staff members,鈥 stated Trustee Judy Kosmerly, after a draft budget presentation was presented to the board by Adam Guilbault, RDSB superintendent of business at a board meeting last week.
鈥淲e would like you (Mr. Guilbault) to tell your team that we appreciate all the hard work that you have done on the budget,鈥 stated David Farrow, RDSB chair. 鈥淚 too feel that having an estimated small surplus in our budget bodes well for the future.鈥
鈥淚t also shows that some of our lobbying as a board for our students is paying off,鈥 said Mr. Farrow. 鈥淎gain, thank you for all the work you and your team have done, it is very impressive.鈥
Mr. Guilbault went through the draft budget at the meeting, noting a final submission of the budget will be presented to the board on June 30 for approval before it is submitted to the Ministry of Education. 鈥淲e are waiting for the ministry to provide a response on education programs funding announcements.鈥
鈥淥verall, we are still seeing a small decrease in deficit funding from the province to the board,鈥 said Mr. Guilbault. He said a projected surplus of $5,249 is being looked at for the 2026-2027 budget.
Trustee Judy Hunda said, 鈥淚 just want to thank you Adam (Guilbault) and all those who work with you, for the work you and your team have done. We understand you don鈥檛 have all the final funding announcements and financial information you need as of yet, but most importantly we again have a balanced budget. And I am very pleased to see all special programs are going to remain in place, as they are very important to our students.鈥
RDSB director of education Bruce Bourget said, 鈥淭here is a tremendous amount of work that has been done, by Adam and his team, by everyone who helped prepare the budget.鈥
