Assiginack Council passed a 2026 budget with a 6.9% tax hike. Mayor Reid stated the increase was necessary to maintain services like road plowing and the arena despite rising fuel and equipment costs.

Council passed its 2026 budget at a meeting last week, with a final vote of council being 3-2 in favour.
鈥淣o one wants increases in the budget, but we have no other options,鈥 Mayor Reid (who under the Municipal Act can vote on motions of council and has always done so) told The Expositor. 鈥淓ither we increase the budget and tax rates, or we cut services and not plowing roads, closing the library or the arena are things I am sure local residents don鈥檛 want to see.鈥
