Canada extended the firearms amnesty until 90 days after an upcoming Supreme Court decision. Critics, including local MP Jim Belanger, argue the $750 million buyback funds should target mental health instead.
CANADA鈥擳he federal government is extending the amnesty for owners of banned firearms until a legal challenge is ruled on at the Supreme Court of Canada level.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaaree told Canadian Press in an interview on June 9 that the government felt it was appropriate to extend the amnesty order 鈥渙ut of respect for the court, out of respect for firearms owners. We still maintain that our position is strong, and we have every confidence that we will be successful in overcoming the present court challenge.鈥
The federal government, since 2020, has banned about 2,500 types of firearms, including the Ar-15 and Ruger Mini-14, on the basis they only belong on the battlefield in times of conflict.
