GARDEN RIVER—Barbara Ann Nolan, originally from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, has been honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Algoma University. 

“I was not expecting anything like this until I received a letter from the president of Algoma University, and it read ‘I would like to congratulate you,’” stated Barbara Ann Nolan, last week. She was one of two people celebrated by Algoma University to receive honorary doctorate degrees at the university’s spring convocation ceremonies this past Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie. “I couldn’t believe it; I was in shock.”

“It is an honour to be bestowed an honorary doctorate degree from the university,” said Ms. Nolan.

“Two extraordinary leaders will receive honorary doctorates from Algoma University this spring during its convocation ceremonies in Sault Ste. Marie and Brampton,” an Algoma University release states. “The 2026 recipients are Barbara Ann Nolan and Patricia M. Ningewance Nadeau.”
