Algoma University awarded Barbara Ann Nolan an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts for her five decades of pioneering work in preserving, teaching, and revitalizing the Anishinaabemowin language.
GARDEN RIVER鈥擝arbara Ann Nolan, originally from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, has been honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Algoma University.
鈥淚 was not expecting anything like this until I received a letter from the president of Algoma University, and it read 鈥業 would like to congratulate you,鈥欌 stated Barbara Ann Nolan, last week. She was one of two people celebrated by Algoma University to receive honorary doctorate degrees at the university鈥檚 spring convocation ceremonies this past Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 believe it; I was in shock.鈥
鈥淚t is an honour to be bestowed an honorary doctorate degree from the university,鈥 said Ms. Nolan.
鈥淭wo extraordinary leaders will receive honorary doctorates from Algoma University this spring during its convocation ceremonies in Sault Ste. Marie and Brampton,鈥 an Algoma University release states. 鈥淭he 2026 recipients are Barbara Ann Nolan and Patricia M. Ningewance Nadeau.鈥
