LITTLE CURRENT鈥擮n Saturday morning, August 29, a small crowd gathered to pay tribute to William Michie, who died in 1986. The Army Navy Air Force Veterans  ANAVET Fred Nesbit Branch 176, were on hand to give Bill Michie his final veteran鈥檚 honour. The ANAVET chapter was established on the Island in 2018, and they have been proudly doing these commemorations for veterans at families鈥 requests.

The bugle played Taps and the Sgt. Charles A. Golden Silver Star Memorial Rifle Team fired a salute over Mr. Michie鈥檚 grave. Mrs. Michie was then presented with the folded Canadian flag. Tucked inside were three empty bullet shells to represent honour, duty and service.

鈥淗e got a better send-off now than when he died,鈥 Mrs. Doris Michie said, with tears in her eyes. 鈥淚t was beautiful. I never thought it would be like that,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was surprised because I didn鈥檛 know nothing about it until they approached me about it. And I thought, 鈥榦h, that can鈥檛 be right,鈥 because I never heard tell of it. But it was beautiful. They said if I couldn鈥檛 come, they would bring the flag to the Manor, but I couldn鈥檛 believe it, so, I had to see it for myself,鈥 said the spry 97-year-old. 鈥淚t was beautiful,鈥 she added, 鈥淚鈥檓 glad I came.鈥

This fall, when the veterans鈥 banners are hung on the light standards in downtown Little Current, William Michie鈥檚 banner will be among them.
