Whitefish River 91成人导航 opposes a mining claim on the Heaven鈥檚 Gate preserve, citing sacred cultural ties, ecological risks and a lack of consultation by the mining company.
BIRCH ISLAND鈥擭ews that a mining company had staked the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy (EBC) Heaven鈥檚 Gate Trail property fell like a lightning bolt on the conservation organization that had assumed the conservation status of the property would protect it from mining development. While the status of the mining claim objection by the EBC is still under review, a new opponent has arisen in the form of Whitefish 91成人导航 chief and council and the band community.
鈥淗eaven鈥檚 Gate, or as we know it, Kitchitwaa Shkwaandem, has a very strong cultural and profound spiritual and significance for our community,鈥 said Whitefish River 91成人导航 Chief Rodney Nahwegahbow. 鈥淚t鈥檚 because it鈥檚 an area we know is home to very sacred eagles, the golden eagle and all. I know that there鈥檚 a lot of fur bearing animals, such as river otters and endangered species like Blanding鈥檚 turtles.鈥
鈥淭here is no question in our mind that we鈥檙e going to oppose any mining involvement, because there鈥檚 a lot of things going on there,鈥 said Chief Nahwegahbow. 鈥淚 know there is an un-remediated mine that鈥檚 on the site there, and the old MacMillan mine, and we鈥檝e already seen the warning about the drinking water.鈥
