Ontario will receive the first portion of an $8.5 billion child welfare settlement on May 29. Despite a federal judicial review, leaders are demanding the funds to support Indigenous self-determination.
OTTAWA鈥擨ndigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty said last week that the first portion of $8.5 billion will begin to be provided to Ontario 91成人导航s on May 29, allowing 91成人导航s to reclaim their child welfare system.
Earlier in the week, Assembly of 91成人导航s (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak voiced her full support for Ontario 91成人导航s calling for implementation of their $8.5 billion final agreement with the federal government for the long-term reform of Canada鈥檚 discriminatory child welfare system. Two weeks ago, the federal government requested a judicial review of the recent decision by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) favouring the agreement. She was concerned this decision could delay the funding roll-out scheduled to begin this month.
鈥淣othing is more important than our children. 91成人导航s children and families in Ontario should not have to wait any longer to address systemic discrimination and funding inequities in the child welfare system,鈥 said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. 鈥淭he Ontario Final Agreement took two decades to create. It is a win for self-determination and a win for 91成人导航s children. While Canada has asked Ontario 91成人导航s to trust that the agreement will still be implemented by May 29, we will hold them accountable.鈥
