INGERSOLL—While Roundup (which includes the active ingredient glyphosate) continues to be important for farmers, some are losing certain crops  as they have developed a resistance to the product. The policy advisor for the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario (CFFO) says the agricultural community needs to use other products and companies like Bayer need to come up with new alternatives that are as effective as Roundup.

“Roundup has been a very good product for farmers in many ways,” said Paul Bootsma, policy advisor for CFFO. “That is why we don’t want to see a ban of Roundup. But a company like Bayer understands they probably need new products that will do the same job, but not be a concern (to members of the public) using different chemical formulations. That is the challenge now. We don’t want to be forced to have to use a product that is potentially harmful. Outside the agricultural industry there is more and more pressure to avoid using Roundup.”

Mr. Bootsma writes a regular commentary for CFFO. “The point of my column (‘A Bayer Class Action’) is there is growing resistance to Roundup and products with glyphosate. I wonder how much longer the agricultural industry will be able to use glyphosate? There is a tremendous amount of resistance.”
