GRAND BEND鈥擫ittle Current鈥檚 Cliff Jewell has taken to brush and canvas with a vengeance since his retirement, although he was honing his skills long before bidding the day job adieu. In early May, Mr. Jewell submitted three paintings to the Paint Ontario juried exhibition in Grand Bend with all three making it into the show鈥攏o small accomplishment, but one of those works also received an award at the show. Better yet, by shows end one work featured a red dot.

Characteristically, the artist downplays the honour. 鈥淚 was proud just to have three of my works accepted for the show,鈥 said Mr. Jewell. Small wonder, as the show receives entries from 279 talented artists from across the province. Artists are drawn to this premier art show where the competition is fierce in large part because the prizes are incredible鈥攖he top prize was $3,000 and there were some $14,000 in awards overall. Contributed by businesses and dedicated patrons of the arts, the prize purse ensures that Paint Ontario鈥檚 exhibition and sale ranks among the elite art competitions in the province.

Speaking of elite art, Mr. Jewell, along with a host of other local artists are hosting a celebration, 鈥楢 Little Bit of Whealism,鈥 as a loving tribute to the late Ivan Wheale at the Gore Bay Harbour Centre (Studio 6, 40 Water Street, Gore Bay) from May 23 to July 17. The public is invited to the opening reception 11 am, Saturday, May 23.
