Every student at Shawanosowe School received a brand-new bike and helmet, totaling 58 bikes. The wellness initiative was funded by a budget surplus and organized by the Family Wellbeing Centre.
WHITEFISH RIVER FIRST NATION鈥擳he excitement was palpable at the Shawanosowe School on Thursday, May 28. Each student in the school was going to receive a brand-new bicycle, 58 bikes in all, and the classrooms and hallways were practically vibrating with anticipation.
鈥淲e came about a month ago with a catalogue of what bikes they could choose,鈥 said Sarah Quackenbush, from Breakaway Sports, 鈥渁nd we measured their heights and their heads for helmets. So, they鈥檝e been anticipating this for over a month now.鈥
Not only did Ms. Quackenbush and Bill Slaght record all the bike choices, and the measurements of heights and heads of each child in the school, they recorded serial numbers with children鈥檚 names beside so there would be no mix-up on the big day. 鈥淚f a child already had a good bike,鈥 Ms. Quackenbush explained, 鈥渨e sized up for their next bike, when they鈥檝e outgrown the one they鈥檝e got. Just so everyone got a bike, no one was left out.鈥
