Gordon/Barrie Island approved a 4.3% tax increase. Reeve Lee Hayden cited flood damage to roads and high winter snowplowing costs as key drivers, with no service cuts planned for the year.
GORDON-BARRIE ISLAND鈥擱esidents of Gordon/Barrie Island township can partially blame an increase in their taxes for this year on the flood damage that hit the Manitoulin in April.
鈥淲e passed our budget at a meeting this week with a 4.3 percent increase,鈥 stated Gordon/Barrie Island Reeve Lee Hayden, after a council meeting last week. 鈥淧art of the increase is that we were able to take into account the damage to some of our roadways in the last major flooding that affected the township.鈥
鈥淧assing our budget a little late is allowing us to include these unforeseen costs due to the damage to roads by the flooding,鈥 said Reeve Hayden. 鈥淚 think we (Gordon/Barrie Island) got off relatively easy compared to other communities with washouts and roads being taken out by the flooding. Compared to some municipalities we did fairly well.鈥
