Little Current native Mark Varey鈥檚 three-year-old filly, Hawberry, won her maiden race at Woodbine on May 23. Despite 18-1 odds, she surged to victory, marking a successful win for her first-time owner.
WOODBINE鈥擬ark Varey is elated this week. His three-year-old filly Hawberry won her maiden race at the Woodbine track in Toronto on Saturday, May 23, coming from behind to clinch the top spot in difficult track conditions.
鈥淚t was very exciting,鈥 said Hawberry鈥檚 proud owner Mark Varey when contacted by The Expositor following the race. 鈥淚 spent all day waiting in the rain鈥攖he track was saturated. We were in the 11th race.鈥
Mr. Varey, a Little Current native, said he purchased Hawberry from a yearling sale at Woodbine two years ago. She was sired by Collected from the Reload mare Caraway. (Interestingly, another horse, jointly owned by Mr. Varey and Steve Doane, Clive Cross, was sired by Reload.)
