The Little Current and District Fish and Game Club successfully harvested 80,000 walleye eggs despite flood damage at Bass Creek. They also provided fishing rods to local students and joined local cleanup efforts.
SHEGUIANDAH鈥擣or decades the volunteers of the Little Current and District Fish and Game Club have set their walleye trap in the mouth of Bass Creek in hopes of capturing male and female walleye to milk for sperm and eggs which would then make their way to the club鈥檚 hatchery. Club members check the nets each morning in hopes of finding fish inside. Over the past few years the nets have come up empty, but this year they found success.
鈥淲e managed to get two females and a male,鈥 said Terry Stewart, who coordinated this year鈥檚 efforts. That translates into 80,000 fertilized eggs for the club鈥檚 incubators. 鈥淪o far, it鈥檚 looking good.鈥 He notes the club will only lose about 10 percent of the fry to mortality.
Not bad, considering that the weather has been terrible this year. In fact, the flooding that bedeviled Islanders a couple of weeks ago caused significant damage to the banks of Bass Creek. So much so that the club had to cancel its popular Education Week program.
