LITTLE CURRENT—A bid by Little Current Minor Hockey Association (LCMHA) to start a U15 all girls team to play under the Flyers umbrella has been dashed, at least temporarily, unless the team can get registered under the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA).

In speaking with a district representative for the Northern Ontario Hockey Association (NOHA), the governing body for minor hockey on Manitoulin, it was understood by LCMHA that the NOHA would give its blessing to Manitoulin Minor Hockey Association (MMHA) for the Flyers to proceed with icing an all-girls team. An additional five U18 girls hoping to play with the U15 team would need separate permission from MMHA to play down a division. 

However, at a meeting on August 11, the executive voted down allowing the five U18 players on the team using NOHA policy. Immediately following the denial LCMHA quickly gathered 45 signatures, 30 more than required by the MMHA bylaw to see a special meeting called to further plead their case but then word came down from the NOHA that a misunderstanding had occurred. It had not given its blessing for an all-girls team, which in Ontario oversees all girls’ teams, Jason Marchand, NOHA executive director, told The Expositor.
