WIIKWEMKOONG—In what many viewed as a challenge to decisions by chief and council over the distribution of the Robinson Huron Treaty Annuities settlement and the decision to invest in a development in Edmonton, Ogimaa Tim Ominika was returned in a landslide victory as chief of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory.

New homes, a 96-bed long term care facility and a $112 million policing agreement were among the milestones that helped propel Chief Ominika to re-election. The chief won handily, receiving 40 percent of the total vote and 220 votes more than his nearest competitor.

Ogimaa Ominika received 711 votes, with challenger Jean Oshkabewisens receiving 491 votes, Gladys Wakegijig receiving 313 votes and Rachel Manitowabi receiving 259 votes.
