Following April flooding, Haven House women's shelter safely relocated its clients while maintaining services. Concurrently, MFR won a Feed Ontario Award of Achievement for its food bank operations.
MINDEMOYA鈥擜lready suffering the trauma of domestic violence, women fleeing to the safety of Manitoulin Family Resources (MFR) Haven House women鈥檚 shelter were forced to once again flee, this time from the rising waters of the April flooding in Mindemoya. Thankfully, the dedication of the staff and support of the community, safe accommodation was quickly arranged. As an added bonus, MFR recently won an award for its food security efforts.
Six weeks after the disastrous flood that required evacuation of Manitoulin Family Resources鈥 women鈥檚 shelter, Martha Boyle, who directs the Violence Against Women Prevention program, says she and her team continue to ensure no interruption in services for women and children fleeing violence.
鈥淭hanks to the creativity of the team, (realtor) Leanne Lewis and the many donors who responded to the April flood emergency, and a willing network of other Northeast Ontario shelter directors, we can arrange for safe accommodation as necessary,鈥 said Ms. Boyle. 鈥淢FR also continues to offer counselling and other outreach services.鈥 The Crisis Line phone is 705-968-0499 and is answered 24 hours a day.
