LITTLE CURRENT鈥擲aturday morning, May 2, on the Little Current waterfront, with the bridge as its backdrop, the NEMI Line Dancers participated in their first ever International Line Dance Flashmob (ILDF). 鈥淭he flashmob event brings the global line dance communities together on a specific day in May, dancing to specific choreographed dances in public spaces and raising funds for charity,鈥 organizer Lori Mastelko explained. The ILDF began in 2020, during COVID, and has grown exponentially over these past six years.

Groups from all over the world took part in the event. 鈥淚鈥檓 not sure how many groups participated world-wide,鈥 Ms. Mastelko said. Counting the little red dots on the world map was difficult when so many were piled up together. She was, however, able to count the dots across Canada. 鈥淭here were 59 in total, with 37 of those in Ontario, and three of those little red dots were up in Northern Ontario, in Sudbury, North Bay and Manitoulin Island.鈥 Ms. Mastelko pointed out a significant increase in Ontario, from only 16 groups in 2025. 鈥淭he event is growing in popularity in Canada,鈥 she said.

The Line Dance Foundation (LDF), a separate entity from the International Line Dance Flashmob, is a registered charity which supports those involved in line dance on a professional level world-wide, should they be unable to earn their living due to illness, accident or other circumstances. Their support extends to choreographers, instructors, performers and DJs, as well, they provide grants and scholarships to students in dance and performing arts. 鈥淭his year,鈥 the ILDF website states, 鈥渨e are partnering with the Line Dance Federation to support a good cause. Staying true to our long-standing motto 鈥楩rom the community, for the community,鈥 we invite participating groups, if possible, to donate one Euro, pound or dollar per dancer, to our official donation page 鈥 and, of course, more is always welcome.鈥 Ms. Mastelko was happy to report she would be sending $90, donated by the 22 participants of the NEMI Line Dancers to the charity via Go Fund Me.
