Wiikwemkoong鈥檚 Ngwaagan Gamig Recovery Centre held a community session to plan the future of its addiction services and transition home, emphasizing Anishnaabe culture and healing.
WIIKWEMKOONG鈥擜ddiction can affect individuals, families and communities in many ways. Approaching and addressing addictions involves community-based support and advocacy. Organizations such as Ngwaagan Gamig Recovery Centre Inc. in Wiikwemkoong provides programs and services in support of those who are experiencing these challenges.
In the midst of this critical health issue in Canada, the effects amongst Indigenous people and communities are driven by ongoing systemic racism and loss of culture. Ngwaagan Gamig Recovery Centre Inc. continues to put its best efforts towards supporting addiction and recovery through Anishnaabe aadziwin (to be living an Anishnaabe way of life through body, mind and spirit) and offer a variety of services including counselling, support groups, treatment programming and aftercare.
Ngwaagan Gamig Recovery Centre held a two-day community gathering at the Wikwemikong Recreation Centre on April 29 and 30. The event focused on their transition home services with the intent on forming strategic plans that will enhance and lengthen the services that the recovery centre offers clients. The conversations were filled with valued input in regards to recovery with an emphasis on healthy living, healing in wellbriety, and most importantly bridging the gaps through Anishnaabe aadiziwan. It was an inviting and heartfelt space for sharing, listening and understanding through engaging conversation and group discussions.
