NEMI has declared a total fire ban due to dry, windy conditions and wildfire risks. Other Manitoulin departments have banned large fire permits, though campfires are still allowed there.
MANITOULIN鈥擳he Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) has imposed a total fire ban in the municipality, while the rest of the municipal fire departments on Manitoulin Island will not be allowing permits for large fires.
鈥淲e have issued a total fire ban,鈥 said Duane Deschamps, NEMI fire chief, last Thursday. 鈥淚f and when we get significant rainfall in the area, we will look to lifting the fire ban.鈥
The NEMI town website reported last Thursday in part, 鈥淭own of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands; fire ban alert for all of (NEMI). Due to extremely dry conditions and an increased risk of wildfires, (NEMI) has enacted a fire ban. Fire bans are issued to inform citizens of conditions that pose a high fire risk and the potential danger caused by open fires. Open burning is prohibited during fire bans. This alert will remain in effect until conditions change.鈥
鈥淲e are playing it safe, because of the winds we are getting in the area and the dry conditions we are presently facing,鈥 continued Mr. Deschamps.
