Onus is now on property owners to tackle phragmites
Following biologist Judith Jones stepping down, Manitoulin Streams and the Nature Conservancy of Canada are stepping in to monitor and survey invasive phragmites across the Island.

MANITOULIN鈥擳he Manitoulin Phragmites Project has accomplished an amazing amount over the past several years since its launch in 2017. Phragmites, aka the invasive species formerly known as the European common reed, had threatened to overwhelm, and in some cases already had, many of our beaches and waterfronts.
The charge was led over the last decade by Manitoulin biologist Judith Jones, whose organizational skills was the impetus that started the effort and it was her stolid determination that drove it forward. In many ways at great personal cost.
But Ms. Jones announced last year that she had to take a step back due to personal family and business reasons鈥攈anding over the figurative reins to Manitoulin Streams and Island municipalities.
