The indefinite closure of the Interfor lumber mill in Nairn Centre has prompted local leaders to coordinate an economic response with nearby Espanola. A community job fair will be held on June 24 at the Nairn Community Centre to assist affected workers.
NAIRN CENTRE鈥擳he fallout from the announced closure of the Interfor lumber mill in Nairn Centre is still unfolding, with both that community and nearby Espanola marshalling forces to offset the economic impact of the closure. Among the efforts is a community job fair to be held on June 24.
The Township of Nairn and Hyman is preparing for significant economic fallout after Interfor announced it would indefinitely curtail operations at its sawmills in Nairn Centre and Gogama. (Gogama is currently also dealing with nearby wildfires threatening the town.)
Nairn and Hyman Mayor Amy Mazey says the news is still sinking in for the small community. 鈥淭he mill has been operating in our town for a very long time. It鈥檚 been a major employer.鈥
