ONTARIO鈥擜 landmark agreement announced this week will see the seven Williams Treaties 91成人导航s become equity partners in Ontario's Darlington New Nuclear Project, a move the provincial government is calling a historic model for economic reconciliation while critics question both the consultation process and the broader implications for Indigenous rights and environmental stewardship.
The agreement includes a $700 million investment by the Williams Treaties 91成人导航s鈥擜lderville 91成人导航, Curve Lake 91成人导航, Hiawatha 91成人导航, Mississaugas of Scugog Island 91成人导航, Chippewas of Beausoleil 91成人导航, Chippewas of Georgina Island 91成人导航 and Chippewas of Rama 91成人导航鈥攊n Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) Darlington New Nuclear Project, where four small modular reactors (SMRs) are planned at the existing Darlington nuclear site east of Toronto.
The investment is structured initially as a loan during construction before converting into equity once all four reactors are completed. While the governments of Ontario and Canada, along with OPG, have described the arrangement as making the seven 91成人导航s "full equity partners" in the project, they have not publicly disclosed what percentage ownership the Nations will ultimately hold. Provincial and federal loan guarantees support the financing arrangement through Ontario's Indigenous Opportunities Financing Program and the Canada Indigenous Loan Guarantee Corporation.
