The Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club hosted their first-ever Duck Derby this Canada Day, selling 3,000 ducks to raise funds for Manitoulin Streams despite windy weather challenges.
PROVIDENCE BAY鈥擟anada Day brought a crowd of people to the boardwalk in Providence Bay. A huge undertaking was about to begin as the Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club hosted its first-ever Duck Derby, and the onlookers had a vested interest in the outcome of the race.
Jessica Bisaillon spearheaded the event, with a large team of volunteers assisting along the way. 鈥淪o, this is the first time we have ever, on the Island, done a duck race. This is done with all the licencing and MTO and all the permits and everything,鈥 Ms. Bisaillon said, taking a moment to speak to the Expositor at the derby. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been about seven months to get this going, to get all the bodies of government involved,鈥 she explained. 鈥淪o, I had to get MNR first to approve it. Then I got MTO to approve by the bridge and then I had to get Central Manitoulin Council to pass this as a whole. It took some time. It definitely was work. People said it was impossible but here we are today, we鈥檙e doing it,鈥 she said, proudly.
