GORE BAY—On July 17, 1926, the Royal Canadian Legion was officially incorporated. In recognition of this and the rededication of its cenotaph, the Western Manitoulin Branch #514 held a special anniversary ceremony last Friday evening. Despite the inclement weather outside that forced the celebration to be held inside the Legion, it did not dampen the spirit of all those who participated and attended.

“I wish to thank each and every one of you for attending this special ceremony,” stated Jim Woods, immediate past president of the RCL Branch #514. “The rededication of a branch memorial or cenotaph is a very significant event in the history of all branches of the Royal Canadian Legion, across the great nation of Canada.”

“It is performed to remind all members of the legion, that their first and foremost obligation as a member of this organization, is to promote remembrance, never allowing what our veterans have done, or are still doing, to give us the freedom we have today,” continued Mr. Woods. “It also is a symbol for our children and our children’s children, to pick up the torch and carry on the most important act of remembrance, so that our veterans are never, ever forgotten.”
