CANADA—The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Sea Lamprey Control Centre has launched its 2026 field season to manage invasive sea lamprey in the Great Lakes. This critical work helps native fish populations and supports the overall health of the Great Lakes ecosystem. The work will include Manitoulin locations.

Sea Lamprey are an aquatic invasive species that attach to and feed on most fish. They pose a serious threat to fish populations in the Great Lakes region, an area vital to Canada’s economic and conservation goals.

Canada and the United States work together through the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC) to manage sea lamprey. Under the Great Lakes Fisheries Convention Act, DFO is the Canadian delivery agent and collaborates with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to assess and manage invasive sea lamprey populations, including applying lampricide in both Canadian and US waters. This coordinated, binational approach is critical as sea lamprey move freely between Canadian and US waters.
