Central Manitoulin hosted a Community Appreciation Day barbecue on May 23 to honor volunteers and organizations who supported the township during April’s state of emergency flood crisis.
MINDEMOYA—The irony was not lost on political leaders and employees of the Township of Central Manitoulin. Blustery winds and a potential downpour threatened to wash out a Community Appreciation Day barbecue on May 23 to thank volunteers who stepped up to help their neighbours when Island communities were recently flooded. Rain showers started just as people began lining up for free hamburgers, hot dogs and cake provided by the Municipality to express its appreciation to all those who came to the rescue when the Township declared a state of emergency in mid-April. However, inclement weather did not dampen participants’ appreciation for the delicious gesture and the pat on the back for a job well done.
There was an exceptional outpouring of support weeks earlier from individuals, businesses and both government and non-governmental organizations that answered the call when calamity struck. Dozens, if not hundreds, gave their time, money, goods and/or services to assist homeowners and local business owners as they battled high water levels. Administration staff report that 40+ township residents volunteered to stuff sandbags over two hectic days while Oasis Property Development delivered the sand needed to fill thousands of bags. People from Southern Ontario communities also reached out to offer donations or to show up in person to give a helping hand.
M’Chigeeng 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ provided a potable water truck in response to a drinking water advisory when water pressure temporarily interrupted the municipal water supply. Mindemoya Foodland gave both food and water donations to those in need and Tim Horton’s as well OK Tire and BAMM Automotive offered food and beverages including coffee, donuts and pizza for staff and volunteers. The Freshwater Church hosted a chili dinner in addition to its fundraising activities to collect donations.
