MANITOULIN—Initial reaction to a proposal by the province to expand the bring your own (formerly tailgate) alcoholic beverages permits for municipally designated or public events has not received support from Manitoulin Island municipal leaders.
“Our council has not talked about this issue, but our staff is not recommending this to be passed as it is too risky to manage,” stated Al MacNevin, mayor of the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI). “I have talked to our CAO on this issue, and he (Dave Williamson) said it would be a difficult process to manage.”
“If I’m not mistaken this proposal would have to be approved by municipalities before it could go ahead,” said Brenda Reid, mayor of Assiginack Township. “I can’t speak for council, but I don’t think we would approve this.”
