Hawberry, a freshman racehorse owned by Manitoulin resident Mark Varey, finished second in the Algoma Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack, bringing her rookie record to one win and two seconds in six starts.
TORONTO鈥擧awberry continues her good results in the horseracing world, finishing second in the recent Algoma Stakes race at Woodbine racetrack in late August.
鈥淪he did very well,鈥 stated Hawberry鈥檚 owner Mark Varey, of Manitoulin Island. At the beginning of the seven-furlong race, and against 10 other horses, Hawberry was held up in the early going of the race; she was given mild encouragement past the 5/8 pole and advanced steadily inside. Hawberry was then urged along the post at the 5/6th pole to come out and went wide in mid-stretch, keeping on the inside and passing a foe to get into second place.鈥
