It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Mark Ansara of Little Current, age 70, at the Sudbury Health Sciences North Hospital on August 18, 2026 surrounded by his family. Mark is survived by his spouse Christine Catherwood, his son Brian and his sisters Cathy and Susan (Marc Mageau). He was also uncle to Jaime Fortin (Brendan Tremblay) and Jack and Catherine Mageau. Mark was predeceased by his parents George and Margaret Ansara. Born in Timmins, and raised there and in Porcupine, he attended Roland Michener Secondary School where he met a group of lifelong friends. Mark received his Bachelor of Arts from Trent University and a Law degree from the University of New Brunswick. During his over 35 year career as a lawyer, he worked in a number of positions within the legal system often with the goal of representing the disenfranchised including being the executive director of the Legal Aid Clinic in Timmins. A voracious reader and a lifelong “political junkie,” his knowledge was vast and deep. There was virtually no topic that you could mention to Mark that he could not contribute some obscure fact. He was an avid runner in his younger days and enjoyed walking and hiking as he got older. He and Christine made a life-changing decision to leave Timmins and head to Little Current on Manitoulin Island where they built a new life and enjoyed the summer hustle and bustle and the natural beauty of the island. Mark was well known around the community as an approachable, friendly guy, with a great sense of humour, willing to talk to anyone. He had a large group of friends from all walks of life. Mark’s devotion to his son Brian was obvious from the day Brian was born. A dedicated father, he was very proud of his son and they enjoyed watching and enthusiastically discussing movies, politics and literature. He treasured Brian and was particularly grateful for the time they spent together this summer in Little Current where they enjoyed the natural beauty, and of course, the food that the Island offers. He will be greatly missed by the many friends and family he leaves behind. There will be a Celebration of Life hosted at the Anchor Inn Restaurant on Saturday, September 26 from 2 to 5 pm.
