Manitoulin Navy League Cadet Ed Kift Corps holds first parade at Little Current Battle of the Atlantic commemoration.
LITTLE CURRENT鈥擬embers of the newly formed Manitoulin Navy League Cadet Ed Kift Corps joined the Manitoulin Sea Cadets Corps, Little Current Royal Canadian Legion and Manitoulin Navy League and community members in observing the anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic. Gathered in Soldiers鈥 Park, on the waterfront of the Port of Little Current, the young cadets were taking part in their very first parade following their formation. The young cadets did very well in their first outing.
The Battle of the Atlantic is the name given to the effort to keep embattled Britain supplied during the initial days of the Second World War. Convoys of supply ships had to not only navigate the stormy waters of the North Atlantic but also thread the deadly cordon of German U-boat submarines bent on preventing them from carrying out those duties.
Lt. (N) Sylvain Boucher acted as master of ceremonies while the assembly stood at attention. 鈥淭o all our cadets here today, those we honour today were not much older than many of you,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey stood watch in the cold and in the dark. Relied on teamwork and showed courage in the face of uncertainty. The values they live by鈥攄uty, discipline and service鈥攁re the same values you carry forward today. Their legacy lives on in you. Now, as we remember the Battle of the Atlantic, we honour not only the past, but the responsibility we carry up into the future. To remember their sacrifice to honour their service and to uphold the freedom they defended. Because freedom did not cross the Atlantic on its own, it was carried, protected and defended by those who serve.鈥
