Ontario invested $5.1M to help Bioveld study restarting Espanola鈥檚 idled pulp mill as a "Pulp+" bioproducts hub, aiming to restore jobs while exploring biomass, renewable fuels, and green tech.
ESPANOLA鈥擳hree years after the machinery fell to silence at Espanola鈥檚 sprawling pulp and paper mill, the province is putting $5.1 million behind an effort to determine whether it can be brought back to life, this time as something considerably more ambitious than the mill Espanola once knew.
Ontario announced September 3 that it is investing $5.1 million in Bioveld North, the BMI Group subsidiary that purchased the former Domtar property in late 2025. The money comes through two streams of the province鈥檚 Forest Biomass Program and will pay for engineering and design work toward a potential restart. Bioveld is contributing another $5.4 million, bringing the engineering program to $10.5 million.
