Town of NEMI starts work on new Official Plan
Northeast Town is updating its 10-year-old Official Plan with J.L. Richards ($70,000), projecting up to 386 new households and modest job growth by 2051, though housing land face shortfalls.

NORTHEAST TOWN鈥擨t鈥檚 been 10 years since the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands broke away from the Manitoulin Planning Board, becoming its own planning authority with its own Official Plan. As mandated by the province, Official Plans must be updated every 10 years and so the municipality is well underway with its new plan, with help from the planning firm J.L. Richards and Associates. The cost to the municipality comes in at $70,000.
In its first presentation to council, Erin Reed and Sarah Vereault of J.L. Richards and Associates walked council through where the municipality currently stands in terms of residential development. They shared that between 2020 and 2025, 95 new residential units were created, 48 of which were shoreline residential with an approximately 50/50 split between single and seasonal dwellings. The other 41 units were erected in the rural areas of the municipality, and not on shoreline. Also during this time, 66 lots were created through planning authority consent.
