KAGAWONG—Retired Conservation Officer Ian Anderson is no stranger to snow, having maintained the West End measuring station for over half a century, and this past few week’s snowfall rates among the heaviest accumulation he has ever seen.

For most of us the snow dump has us focussing on digging out from under the icy pile, but Mr. Anderson looks to the impact snow depth has on the Island deer population.

The recent accumulation of 40 centimetres of additional snow on top of the 40 centimetres that was already out there has the potential to tax the deer population severely, he said. While the deer can hold on for a while, should the snow remain for three weeks there will be a toll on the younger and older deer who will struggle to get to reach browse through the deep snow.
