WIIKWEMKOONG—For decades, Debajehmujig Storytellers have made do with a portable building-based head office in Wiikwemkoong. This past week the Indigenous theatre company gathered with staff, board members (past and present) and a host of friends and supporters to celebrate the grand opening of new administrative digs.

Among the dignitaries speaking at the event were Debajehmujig general manager Ashley Manitowabi, Elder Donna Debassige and Father Paul Robson (who both provided prayers), Ogimaa Tim Ominika (who brought greetings on behalf of chief and council), council language arts and culture portfolio holder Councillor Francis Mandamin, wise council Jeannette Corbiere Lavell (who spoke on some of the history of Debajehmujig) and former general manager Lynda Trudeau.

The smudge, by Ethan Mejaki and prayers were followed by a drum song by Debajehmujig arts animator Tabitha Peltier as Fr. Robson and Mr. Mejaki blessed and cleansed the new offices.

A full kitchen will ensure the crew don’t go hungry.
