Wiikwemkoong hosted its 8th annual Anishinaabemowin Language Gathering, uniting speakers, elders, and learners for workshops, cultural activities, and presentations celebrating the language.
WIIKWEMKOONG鈥擳he Wasse Abin Pontiac School was the place to be for the eighth annual Anishinaabemowin Language Gathering. From August 18 to the 20 there was a keynote address by Martina Osawamick and presenters set up in various classrooms. The organizers laid the three days out with something for everyone, including crafts, birch bark medallion making and cooking when a change of pace was needed.
Wiikwemkoong Anishinaabe Aadiziwin Nakiigamig (WAAN) is relatively new within Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, a collection of three branches under one organization dedicated to the preservation, revitalization and celebration of Anishinaabe language, history, culture, heritage, arts and identity. Who better to host the three-day event, bringing together Elders, knowledge keepers, fluent speakers, youth and community members than WAAN. It mattered little if one was fluent in Anishinaabemowin, or just learning the language, the environment was warm and welcoming to all.
