A Gore Bay resident is fighting a town bylaw banning backyard chickens after receiving an eviction notice for her four pet hens. The issue will be discussed at a committee meeting on July 8.
GORE BAY鈥擴nder a current Town of Gore Bay bylaw, residents within the limits of town cannot own chickens, which means one local resident, Carmen Bertrand, will have to find new homes for her four chickens. She had received the chickens as a Valentine鈥檚 Day present from her husband Terry.
鈥淚 think this bylaw needs to be revisited,鈥 said Ms. Bertrand (who is bringing the issue forward) in a recent interview with The Expositor.
鈥淚 was gifted day-old chicks a year-and-a-half ago by my husband, Terry,鈥 said Ms. Bertrand. 鈥淭hey are very well taken care of, are well behaved, sociable and have become our pets. In the summer we have a big backyard and in the winter they are put in a cage in the garage, (which is heated), and we let them out (in the garage) every day. They also provide eggs,鈥 she said, pointing out the chickens all have names (Jackie, Holly, Olivia, Lea and Luca).鈥
