Gore Bay's Amara Wilson-Zegil enjoyed a transformative month at the Shad Canada summer program at the University of Regina, which solidified her passion for pursuing a future career in engineering.
GORE BAY鈥擳o say that Amara Wilson-Zegil enjoyed the Shad experience this summer would be an understatement.
鈥淚 loved it so much; it was such an amazing experience,鈥 stated Ms. Wilson-Zegil, a Gore Bay resident who this fall will be going into Grade 12 at Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS). 鈥淭here were 100 other teenagers there (Regina, Saskatchewan). No one knew each other, and for many of us it was the first time we were living independently. I made some really good friends that I know I will be keeping in touch with.鈥
鈥淎nd the lectures and workshop presentations and the professors were amazing,鈥 said Ms. Wilson-Zegil.
The Shad enrichment program is named after Shad Creek in southern Ontario, which is close to the school where the program originated in 1981. Shad Canada is an annual Canadian summer enrichment program for high-achieving high school students, held in July. The program is open to both Canadian and international students, and the program is offered at about 21 participating universities across Canada.
